Chapter Sixteen

Luci

It’s late, and I’m just now headed home. I press the doors to the elevator. I was hoping I could bring Fernie a few things before I went home. But it’s already dark outside and I can’t risk going to the park alone.

That group of people I first saw her with a few weeks ago never appear to leave her side. And the way they look at me is odd. As if they’re expecting more than food.

During the day, I’ve seen them around town, alternating where they panhandle money for drugs. Most people in the area offer them money. I want to yell at them at them to stop, that if they want to help, to give them food or clothes. Of course, I don’t. I don’t want to cause a scene or appear heartless. They don’t recognize that Fernie and her friends are addicts, and all they’re doing are providing my mother and her friends their next fix.

The elevator door dings open just as footsteps echo behind me. I press the button to hold the door and keep the elevator in place.

Landon appears, his red tie poking through the collar of his coat and his grin firmly in place. “Well, look who we have here,” he says.

I scrunch my eyes closed, groaning. “Why, Miss Luci, you don’t seem happy to see me.”

He’s teasing me and doing a good job. If I’m being honest, I’m always happy to see him. I’m just not certain where we go from here. In Kiawah, I was that one night, or rather, two-night stand. I didn’t have to worry about coming clean about Fernie or my past. Here, it’s as if I have to work harder to hide it, and I hate it.

Landon has worked here for two weeks. He doesn’t call or text nor has he asked me out. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t stop by at my office several times a day to make me blush, and yes, to make me want him, too.

It starts off innocently enough, a request for office supplies, questions regarding the reimbursement policy, or other matters that pertain to my position. But it always ends with flirting. Lots and lots of flirting until my face is hot enough to boil a pan of water.

I adjust the scarf around my neck as he hits the button to the parking garage.

“Are they still there?” he asks, pretending to whisper.

My hand releases my scarf slowly. I already know where he’s headed.

He rests his back against the wall beside me. “The hickies,” he clarifies. “I must apologize, Miss Luci. I didn’t mean to leave you as many as I did. But you gave me no choice, not with how crazy you were driving me when you—”

The elevator stops and the doors open. “Ma’am,” Landon says, when a woman in scrubs steps on.

“Good evening,” she replies. I recognize her as the nurse who works in the cardiologist’s office on the seventh floor. “How y’all doing?”

“Fine, thank you,” we both say.

Landon keeps chatting with her.
